Turn off screen in Ubuntu?

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10, and it is currently upgrading to 9.04. I want to turn off the screen to save power, but the lock screen option is not what i want cause that causes opperations to cease. I want to have a fully operational computer, with a black screen. Also, im not computer illiterate, so if i have to type something into the terminal thats no problem
