Why is hugh(the polorbear)from ice road truckers workers working for someone else?

Hugh seems the type of guy that exaggerates about everything, especially events related to his success. In season one it was obvious his equipment was substandard and he seemed to be a pretty cheap person. Incidentally I admire Alex more so than any of the other Ice Road truckers due to his outstanding work ethic.
